The 86th annual Academy Awards presentation was a night of few surprises and in the end “12 Years a Slave” walked away with three awards, including Best Picture, while top nominee “American Hustle” was shut out entirely.
“Gravity” received the most wins, with seven Oscars for directing, cinematography, film editing, original score, visual effects, and both sound categories.
Host Ellen Degeneres played it safe and overall made for a very mediocre host. The most interesting moment was a spontaneous selfie that she took with several Oscar nominees including Meryl Streep, Jennifer Lawrence, Julia Roberts, Bradley Cooper, Jared Leto, and Brad Pitt.
She hoped to break the record on Twitter for most retweets of a photo and later announced that she got a message from Twitter that her stunt broke the site.
Degeneres also had fun with the audience of celebrities who often are starving by the start of the broadcast, by offering to order pizza and then following through with a few large pies from Big Mamas & Papas Pizzeria in Hollywood. ABC News reported the man who delivered the pizza was an actual employee and not an actor.
Another memorable moment was made possible by the incredibly talented Darlene Love, who blew away the audience with an impromptu gospel performance. Love starred in “20 Feet from Stardom,” which won for Best Documentary Feature.
Music was quite prominent in the show. In addition to the usual performances by those nominated for original song, Pink sang a medley of tunes in honor of the 75th anniversary of “The Wizard of Oz” and Bette Midler performed “Wind Beneath My Wings” after the in memoriam montage.
Even the rock star cache of U2, nominated for “Ordinary Love” from “Mandela: A Long Walk to Freedom,” could not compete with “Let it Go” from “Frozen.”
Despite a few moments that seemed like time fillers the broadcast ended on time, at 9 p.m.
