If you’re planning on driving to San Diego on Wednesday be warned, two of the area’s biggest events are taking place on the same day which means traffic is going to be at a stand-still.
A billboard above I-805 in San Diego has been advertising opening day of the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club on July 17, which also happens to be the start of preview night for the San Diego Comic-Con, and these two events pull in some of the highest attendance records in the area.
Gates open at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club at 11:30 a.m. with the first post taking place at 2 p.m. Comic-Con attendees who have four-day passes may begin picking up their badges at 3 p.m. at the San Diego Convention Center.
In 2012, 47,339 were in attendance for the start of 75th anniversary year of the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club and Comic-Con topped over 130,000 attendees.
Given the time frame for these two events, there is bound to be some overlap along I-5. The bottleneck leading up to and just past Via de la Valle has historically seen the most congestion.
Those planning to head to the San Diego Convention Center should take I-78 East to I-15 South if possible.
