The Bourne franchise reboots August 3 with the release of “The Bourne Legacy” starring Jeremy Renner, Edward Norton, Rachel Weisz, Joan Allen and Albert Finney. A trailer for the movie debuted yesterday on Apple.com.
The film’s tagline, “There was never just one” sets the tone for the reboot and is a valid premise for continuing the franchise. The casting also indicates this movie is going to be every bit as good as Matt Damon’s series in terms of the acting department. And if there is any concern about Renner’s abilities as an action star—although he held his own against Tom Cruise in “Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol”—there are plenty of jump cuts toward the back half of the trailer showing just how much of a bad ass he can be.
According to the synopsis on Apple.com, “The Bourne Legacy” is an original story by Tony Gilroy, who wrote all three “Bourne” movies to date. Gilroy’s script introduces Renner as a new character in the Bourne universe whose circumstances are the direct result of events in the first three films.
New faces to the series include Weisz, Norton, Stacy Keach and Oscar Isaa while Allen, Finney, David Straitharin and Scott Glenn reprise their roles.
“The Bourne Legacy” opens Aug. 3 everywhere.
