Date: Aug. 9, 2011

Location: Telephone interview

Players: Wilson Morales, editor of BlackFilm.com

Backstory: This is the first of a four-part series of interviews that were conducted in August 2011 with some of the entertainment writers and founders of the leading movie Web sites today including DarkHorizons.com, Collider.com, LatinoReview.com and BlackFilm.com. It may surprise some to learn, as I was, that Wilson Morales, the editor of BlackFilm.com, didn’t actually launch the site. This is surprising because Morales contributes so much content to the site and is present at so many junkets and festivals that his activity certainly mirrors that of other site founders. BlackFilm.com launched in 1997 and Morales said he joined in 1999 and became editor in 2000. He has been with the site for so long that he’s probably considered a founder by default. Like so many entertainment journalists, Morales loves movies and during our interview he recalled the first junket he ever attended, for “Coyote Ugly,” and how he was thrown unexpectedly into a one-on-one interview with Jerry Bruckheimer. Morales also shared who he’d love to interview next—Eddie Murphy—and what he would do if he wasn’t writing about movies.

Editors note: There were several times during the call when the cell reception dropped out. The interview has been edited to remove those interruptions.
