Film District decided to do a “mash up”of its two releases, “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark” and “Drive” for its Hall H presentation. Panelists included Guy Pearce, Carey Mulligan, director Nicholas Winding Rein, Guillermo del Toro and Ron Perlman. Ryan Gosling and Katie Holmes are not here.
The panel was moderated by Eric “Quint” Vespe from Ain’t it Cool News.
2:21 Cast and directors of both films are being introduced.
2:23 Guillermo cracks a joke about his bulged disc on his back. After 40 anything that bulges is welcome.
2:26 Trailer time for Don’t be Afraid of the Dark
2:29: Showing a picture of the small creatures from the movie. Very menacing looking and nasty.
2:35 Carey Mulligan explains how director Nicholas Winding Refn was the entire reason for wanting to do “Drive.”
2:38 Showing the trailer for “Drive.”
2:41 “Drive” looks freaking awesome!
2:42 Guillermo asks Nicholas if he chose L.A. on purpose for the movie? Nicholas doesn’t drive, he’s tried to get his license several times. He wanted to use L.A. as a backdrop but wanted to avoid the scenery that is used so often. He likes shooting with wide lenses.
2:48 Ron Perlman is sharing that he also wanted to work with Nick. Joked that he always felt that he was meant to be born Italian rather than Jewish, which was the same as his character in Drive.
2:49 Showing a clip from Drive.
2:54 This movie is going to be intense! The clip just showed a very tender moment between Ryan Gosling and Carey Mulligan which ends with Ryan’s character pulverizing a guy’s head by stomping repeatedly on the ground. Crazy!
3:03 Guillermo loves creatures and monsters, “not crazy psycho killers with potao peelers killing people slowly.”
3:04 Monsters are a living, breathing “F-you” to the idea that people have to be perfect and behave perfectly, Guillermo said.
3:06 Question for Ron Perlman from the audience. If you could fight anyone in history, living or dead, who would it be? His response? “Dick Cheney.”
3:12 Nick is sharing a hilarious story about his first meeting with Ryan Gosling.
3:15 Carey Mulligan lived with Nick during the filming of “Drive” and shared that she made carrot cakes during her stay.
3:18 Free screening of “Drive” with the cast of the movie at Reading Gaslamp 15 tonight at 7 p.m.
