“Australia” looked so promising when Vanity Fair ran an early publicity photo of its stars, Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman-decked out in their Outback finest-but the final product doesn’t deliver. Jackman, however, deserves his recent selection as People’s Sexiest Man of Alive and “Australia” is testament to this proclamation. Consider this: at a screening of the movie the audience gave an audible exclamation of delight when Jackman appeared in his white tuxedo jacket. There aren’t a lot of moments in cinematic history when the appearance of the leading man leaves the audience breathless. Unfortunately, Jackman’s undeniable sex appeal isn’t enough to boost the movie’s entertainment value. Director Boaz Lurhman uses such broad strokes to paint a picture of Australia’s history during World War II that it detracts from the story.
